I took the chain cover off and found a broken sprocket on the main drive, upon further inspection I found the out feed roller seized, I pulled the roller out and found the shaft had visibly bent. Had the in and out feed rolls recovered at Western Roller in Bend, Or. (yes I will remove the screw first) It looks like it might thread onto the cutter head shaft. Had some trouble with a couple of the bearing block screws which I finally got out with an impact type extractor.
Do you still have this unit? I wouldnt take on if you wont enjoy the process itself, when you could probably buy one in better shape, or any other planer, for a few hundred bucks. There was also an available gear reduction to reduce the feed rate; I never saw the need as the original feed rate left a very nice surface. I replied there, but will share my two cents here as well: Looks like a quality planer to me. Makita made these in Japan, in the 80's, and they are 'industrial grade'. In my opinion theres enough rust there to warrant tearing the whole thing down, in order to properly clean/recondition all the parts. I didnt know how much tension to use so I just tightened the adj screws till it felt right when squeezing by hand. as of 12-19-12 it cost me 209.50 to have j.j. short recover makita 2040 feed rollers.

The carbide knives last far longer but don't leave as nice a finish as the HSS; there was a bit of "peach fuzz" left over when using the carbide knives. Did you do a search for "50mm linear bearing rail" ?
Its still halted as Im still doing the workshop remodel (hard w/ 2 small kids and a full time job).I didnt have rust on the posts, but if I did find some I would try wrapping rags soaked in evapo-rust and then covered in plastic to prevent it from drying out.
I still need to adjust my table rolls a little as I get a little snipe on both ends of a 2 ft long board, about 4 or so inches from the ends. Looking at a porta-power or small floor jack just to break it loose. I was worried that one of the bearing blocks could have worn through and then the shaft would be eaten away, necessitating a full roller replacement. what happened was that two chains got too close to each other , hooked together and it broke the little chain. I quickly Goggled the manual for the Makita 2040 and it's out there. I was able to get my table free but then became involved in another project and it has been sitting waiting for me to get a chance to finish it. They have a great reputation., Unfortunately, the rubber (urethane?) The table was rusted solid on the posts. The 400mm is equivalent to a 15 1/2 planer. Only one of those I've ever seen for sale locally.
I was able to get a few of the panels off, tested for free rotation of the gears, blades, and drums that move the wood (not sure of actual names of the parts yet). I'd check the infeed/out rollers. I have an old 12" that I finally rebuilt a couple years ago aftergeez, must be close to 20 years of hard use.
I just had a similar issue with a larger planer after having it apart to convert the cutterhead to rotary blades. They did a good job on the rollers. I see 2040s in my online classified often enough here in toronto. Anyone know how to remove the silver knob which lets you turn the cutter head? Clean them and then soak the collars with a rust eating penetrating product and give it a couple days spraying occasionally. rollers completely disintegrated. Thanks! I just finished about a month ago fixing up a 2040 I bought at a local swap meet. Something comparable and turnkey around here would run minimum $600-700 and probably still need TLC, unless you wait it out for one of the rare great deals. I believe that the adjustment fork is turning during use, possibly from the slight vibration of the machine running. | Do Not Sell My Data Im not sure how to proceed, I can replace the roller with a factory Makita roller that has the poor coating , Ive also found replacements online that have the polyurethane coating but now Im unsure if they are the Makita quality steel. It really does work like what you see in the infomercials.
Late last winter I had the rollers re coated for my planer, I took them to a place in Calgary to have them done, they said they have done a lot of these rollers over the years, one of the original rollers was recoated the other was damaged as a result of the bearing wearing.
